I am a fourth generation Japanese-American (my maiden name is “Aoki”), who has always been interested in my Japanese heritage.  When I was a student, I did many projects about being a Japanese-American, Pearl Harbor and World War II.  The effects of the atomic bomb was not a major emphasis of my projects; however, after my son’s (Jacob) trip to Hiroshima and meeting the Hirai/Zaikan family, I am much more sympathetic to the effects of the atomic bomb and what the origami crane symbolizes is much more meaningful.

　わたしは，日系４世のアメリカ人(旧姓はアオキといいます)で，日本人としての血のつながりにいつも関心を持っています。学生時代，わたしは日系アメリカ人であること，そしてパールハーバー(真珠湾攻撃)，さらには第２次世界大戦について多くの研究をしました。原爆投下の影響については，わたしの研究の重点ではありませんでしたが，息子(ジェイコブ)が広島へ行って親戚の家族に会った後，わたしは原爆の影響に対してよりいっそう同情的な思いを抱き，折りづるが象徴している事柄をよりいっそう意味深く思うようになりました。

 In Hawaii, there are many references to prefectures and where our Japanese ancestors came from.  When asked, the answer was “Kumamoto”.  I just learned in the last couple of years that my maternal grandmother’s family (Fujimoto) came from Hiroshima.  Perhaps it was faith, and not coincidence, that my Japanese name is Shizuko, which my parents chose to honor this grandmother.  After meeting Kazuyuki, Keiko and their sons, I started wondering if people in Japan think about their family that immigrated to Hawaii and if they try to find them like we tried to find our relatives in Japan.

　ハワイでは，わたしたち日系の祖先がどこの県の出身なのか，話題になることが多くあります。わたしが尋ねた時，その答えは「熊本」でした。でも，わたしはこの２年間で母方の祖母の家族(フジモト姓)が広島の出身だということを知ったばかりです。わたしの日本名がシズコ(＝わたしの祖母の名前）であること（わたしの両親は，わたしに日本名をつける時に，この祖母を敬うことを選びました）は，単なる偶然の一致ではなく，彼女への信頼からきたものだったのです。平井ファミリーに会った後，わたしは，日本の人々はハワイへ移住した祖先について考えるのだろうか，そして，わたしたちが日本の親戚を見つけようとしたように，彼らも見つけようとするのだろうかと思い始めました。

 The Hiroshima government is very generous in their culture exchange program and I cannot thank them enough for allowing Jacob the opportunity to visit Japan and meet our family there.  Perhaps, the government should also look for students in Japan whose family immigrated to Hawaii and send them to Hawaii.  I am sure they would love to meet the branch of the family tree that left Japan to start a new life and see the kind of life they have in Hawaii, like the opportunity Keiko had.

　広島県は，文化交流プログラム（←ジェイコブが参加した）には大変寛大です。わたしは，息子が日本を訪れ，そこで親戚に会う機会を与えてもらったことに対して，いくら感謝してもしきれません。おそらく，県はかつて祖先がハワイへ移住したことのある日本の学生も探して，彼等をハワイへ送る（交流の意味）べきだと思います。わたしは，今回恵子さん（←わたし平井の女房の名前です）が経験したように，彼等もきっと（新しい生活を始めるために日本を離れた）家系図の枝の先にいる人たちに会いたいだろうし，ハワイでの暮らしぶりを見たいだろうと思うのです。

 We enjoyed the visit with Kazuyuki and his family and hoped that they enjoyed their short stay in Kona.  In the short time that they were here, we tried to share with them highlights of Kona and our family life…Kona coffee farms, big game fishing (although we were not lucky enough to catch any fish that day), Teshima Restaurant, Manago Hotel, the family grave and of course, the family pot luck.  At the pot luck they met the “Fujimoto” relatives in Kona and tried “local food”, including Japanese food that have been “Hawaiianized”.

　わたしたちは，この度平井ファミリーとともにその訪問を楽しみました。また彼等もコナでの短い滞在を楽しんだことと思います。彼等がここにいた短期間に，わたしたちはコナのハイライトとわたしたちの家族の暮らしぶりを見せようと努めました・・・　例えば，コナコーヒー農園，ビッグゲーム・フィッシング（残念ながらあの日は一匹の魚も釣れませんでしたけど），テシマ・レストラン，マナゴ・ホテル，家族の墓，そしてポットラック・ディナー等々。ポットラック・ディナーの時には，彼等はコナの「フジモト」つながりの親戚に会い，ハワイ風の日本料理を含んだローカル・フードを食べました。

 For my family in Hawaii, meeting our relatives from Japan is something we never thought was possible until the Hiroshima government presented us with this opportunity.  This was an experience of a lifetime that none of us will ever forget.  Of course the ultimate experience is actually going to Japan and back to our roots, but for most of us it is something that will just not happen and I am thankful for the opportunity to have met my relatives from Japan.

　ハワイのわたしの家族にとっては，日本からの親戚に会うことなんて，広島県がこの機会を与えてくれるまでは，可能だなんて思いもしなかったことなのです。これは，わたしたちの家族が決して忘れることができない人生の体験でした。もちろん，最終的な体験は，わたしたちが実際に日本へ行ってわたしたちのルーツまで戻ることです。でも，わたしたちのほとんどには，起こり得ないことです。わたしは，日本からの親戚に会わせてくれた今回の機会に感謝でいっぱいです。
